San Antonio, TX – Bluebonnets are widely known for their claim to fame as the state flower of Texas. Named because the shape of their petals resemble bonnets worn by pioneer women in the 1800s, these beauties are a sight for sore eyes and nature lovers alike. In the spring, you’ll overhear Texans declare that “the bluebonnets are starting to bloom”, and you’ll certainly want to bear witness to their glory. In San Antonio and surrounding areas, nine key locations have been identified that allow you to view bluebonnets in their natural state. Admire them from afar though, because it is illegal to pick bluebonnets on private property. It’s also illegal to destroy plant life that is present in any Texas State Park. Conservation of these purple-flowered charmers is crucial, so do your part when viewing them at:
- The Bluebonnet Festival in Natalia, Texas, located just 30 minutes outside of San Antonio
- Fredricksburg Rd., in the Willow City Loop near Eckert
- Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg, Texas, about an hour north of San Antonio
- Poteet, Texas, just 40 minutes south of San Antonio and home to the Poteet Strawberry Festival
- McAllister Park
- Boerne Skate Park
- DeWitt County, approximately an hour and a half southeast of San Antonio
- Goliad State Park and Historic Site
- Guadalupe River State Park
