I use my hand impactor (no hammer, just turn it) to undo the flat-head machine screws.  The large Phillips driver normally used on the case screws is the perfect size for this application.

 

You'll notice below the linkage is partially removed (as in the green square-you see the linkage forks almost pulled away from the slides' adjuster rods) , but before you do this, first remove the throttle spring (green circle) off its pin.  It's easily pulled of with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

   

In the red oval you'll see I've already undone the lock-nut on the height adjuster.  Note:  If your bike does not need to be synchronized, LEAVE THESE SUCKERS ALONE!!  Most bikes that are in need of a carb rebuild need to be synced also, but not always.

   

Go ahead and remove the spring and the tab holding it between the 2-3 carbs.  Lay it out with the rest of the carb parts near where it goes for reassembly.
