I recently sanded the original tail and a different tank down to the bare material and got them painted "saxony blue", which is a modern Honda paint code. After sanding and sanding I found the tank didn't have dents, but had some pinholes. A radiator shop soldered some patches on for $30. Other improvements are the Kerker exhaust, stock airbox w/K&N filter, more new tires, and superbike bars. I also put some crash bars on it, for extra chrome and protection. I replaced my old cracked pitted turn signals with some new round ones from an Intruder 1400. They are the same shape, just an inch smaller in diameter and about 3/4" shorter. They also have better rubber mounts at the end of the stem. I also added stainless steel brake lines, may do the same to the oil lines eventually. |
I've put about 4k on the bike this summer putting it at just over 15,000 miles. I want to put another 10-15k on it before I do anything to the engine (I'm living with a weepy head gasket that barely discolors the outer fins every couple of weeks). Later I will prep, prime, and paint the frame. I'm also going to rebuild the front brake caliper and master, unless anyone can recommend an upgrade. I also want to replace all bearings and bushings, including switching to tapered bearings in the headset. |

Got the bike for $650 with 8000 miles on the clock. Since then I have adjusted the valves and timing chain, defroze the front brake, fixed an
oil leak at the hoses, put a vesra clutch and springs in, new fork seals and oil, new GT 501 on the rear, replaced bar switches and got
electric start working, new keyswitch, cleaned fuel system including needle valves, bigger mains, and about three oil changes.
I've put about 1400 miles on it in the three weeks that I have owned it. This is a great bike that runs and cruises like a dream. The paint
that someone gave it is kind of my anti theft device...
I'm planning on restoring it slowly-- I've got a stock front fender coming, side cover and a spare tank to detail. Still I can't figure why
people ask me if it is a Triumph or BMW. There must just be people out there that don't know bikes!
The most recent additions have been a dyna S ignition with Dyna coils and new wires. The bike feels much smoother and crisp all around. The difference is like night and day! The almost 30 yr old engine still has more class the modern ones, but now the ignition is a fair comparison.
Ride on,
Ben
