These are the mounting bolts on the first three years of GL1000 (as far as I know).  Be careful undoing them.  No tellin' how long since they've been unscrewed.  Mine weren't a problem.

Remove old, lubricate, replace new

On the '75 thru '77, nothing else is required for removal of the starter, though later years may need engine mount loosening, I don't know.  I intended on showing the odd angles involved in the removal and insertion, but I discovered that upon pulling the starter, oil started spewing out and running straight down the side stand, nearly a half a quart in total by the time I got rags and a plastic tray in place.  I was in a hurry to get the new starter in (shown).

Removing the old starter took moderately heavy force and wiggling, and still a diagonal type angle to get it out and back in.  Lubricate the new "O" ring and splined shaft.  A little 10-40 motor oil worked fine.

During installation of the new starter, you may need to rotate the splined shaft so it'll match the chained sprocket inside (I did).  After getting it in place, I rotated the engine with the kick-starter a couple times and found I was then able to push the starter in a tad further.   Again, you must not move the bike off the side stand until the starter is reinstalled or you will move the chained sprocket out of place.  Then engine removal would be necessary.
