Page 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7             Removing the front brake master cylinder and calipers

Remove the bolt holding the brake line to each side of the finder using a 10mm socket.

The calipers are attached by two large 19mm bolts.  I'm using a long breaker bar to undo them, although a typical wrench may work with a bit of effort.

Notice below!

Don't lose any washers, and see in this application they are being used as shims to set the calipers in the correct location relative to the brake disks.

Pull the caliper out, put the shim between the brake pads with some force.  Get them in there pretty good and just hang them on the fender brace (for now) as shown.

You can now remove the front wheel by carefully pulling out the board you've place underneath.

My Clymer manual states that you can pull the entire assembly without removing the front wheel, but I quickly figured out that you'd have to pull the bike off the center stand to get the clearance needed to do it with the wheel in place.  That would be fine if you had a full lift, but when "jacking", it would be very risky to take the bike off the center stand....also the front end would be heavy and difficult to manipulate, especially when reassembling.

Remove the other caliper in the same fashion, and hang them.  This is how I've done it.  My Goldwing had a fairing which I've obviously removed.  The headlight ears are handy for this application.

Remove the 10mm bolts holding the master cylinder and brake lever, and lay it over the top of the gauges (2nd photo below).  Do this carefully, you don't want to twist or crimp the brake lines.

I'm going to remove the entire front brake assemble without taking it apart.

Disconnect the brake light terminal ends and move them back out of the way (red).  Then undo the 10mm bolts (blue) that mount the brake line spliter.  There is also an oddly shaped metal bracket underneath the splitter used to hold the ignition switch wiring.

Now carefully undo the coat hanger from a caliper and snake each one in between the forks and re-hang them on the outside of the forks.  Do this with strict attention and care not to twist or crimp the lines.  Take your time.

Now you can get hangers in one hand and the brake lever in the other and, if you've got room lay them down somewhere out of the way, or like me hang them somewhere they won't be disturbed.
