Note:  If you've got a fairing on a pre 1980 Goldwing it is not a Honda fairing.  Most were Vetter fairings, mine is something called an Eliminator II.  I have not shown the removal because it there are many different aftermarket fairings on these Goldwings.  If you've got a "naked" goldwing, I suggest removing the headlight and housing.

No matter how many head bearings, or other procedures I've done several times, I always have the manual setting near by.

Get one!

Ok, let's get this wheel off.

You'll need to put a board under the front tire now that it's off the ground, and undo the nuts at the bottom of each front shock.  I use a crossing pattern for anything and everything, especially if it's aluminum.

After removing all eight nuts, washers and both axle stays, lower the wheel just enough to undo the Phillips head bolt that holds the speedometer cable into its gear mechanism.   You need a quality screwdriver for this that fits correctly.  It can take a good bit of pressure to get it loose.

Detach the upper end of the cable under the speedometer and pull the whole cable out and set aside.

I'm about to remove a brake caliper.  This is necessary in order to remove the wheel, but first I'm going to make something to help later, during assembly.

I've cut these two shims to slide between the brake pads, as soon as the calipers are removed and hung.  They are a little over 4 inches long and taper from 0 to 5/16s of an inch in thickness.

Note:     It is very important that these shims stay clean.  Do not get grease, oil or even dirt on them!!
