The Mustang was introduced in April 1964. The '64½ was considered a 1965 by Ford. People use the terms to note changes Ford made after mid-August 1964. There were engine changes and the generator to an alternator, plus interior and exterior color additions. 1965 saw the 170 six and 260 V8 dropped for the 200 six, and a 289 2bbl V8. The Mustang "GT" package became available on the two versions of the 289 4bbl V8s with sportier suspension. The High Performance 289 helped straight-line performance with a gross HP rating of 271. 1965 saw Caroll Shelby prep the Mustang, and the GT350 became available. Later they were done in house by Ford. Shelby built an average of 2,000 cars a year from 1965 to 1970. The 1965 Shelby GT350 came with a 306 HP version of the HiPo motor, and in 1966 a 400 HP supercharged version was also available. The base price upon introduction was $2320 for the straight 6. A 1965 fastback "GT" with a 4-speed and 271 HP engine package and the handling package was less than $3200. The GT350 was $4550. |
